Considerations regarding the under identification of children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD). International Journal of Psychology, Volume 43, issue 3-4, p. 528-707.
The study investigates adult perceptions that may lead to the underdiagnosis of AD/HD. Parents of 170 children diagnosed with AD/lID aged 6-17 completed the “AD/HD Rating Scale IV” (DuPaul, 1998). Rates of contact with mental health services were also examined. Two thirds of parents with children with AD/HD have already visited another specialist, but only half of them reported receiving adequate help. Most of them failed to recognize AD/HD symptomatology. Learning and behavioural difficulties were reported as the key problems rather than AD/HD symptoms. Improved training about AD/HD for mental health specialists and parents becomes a matter of the utmost importance in Greece, in order to minimize underdiagnosis of disorder.
